Modern agriculture is fossil fuel dependent. Whether we stop, or continue to use fossil fuel, the collapse of our food systems is inevitable. Meanwhile, fantasies of an agrarian permaculture alternative remain a fantasy: ‘Farming without pesticides and machines doesn’t take us all the way to a stunning new future of abundance for eight billion people. It is much more likely to take us back to the 18th century, when we were only poorly feeding an eighth of that population.’
