Zero options left

No options left: The Potsdam Institute assessed 1200 IPPC pathways for keeping global warming in check. Based on an assessment of what is realistic and reasonable, they determined that none of these pathways are viable. 1.5C is long gone – even the UN acknowledges this – and now tipping points and higher global temperatures are out of our control.

Give this dramatic loss of agency, our best pathway for socio-ecological justice is a #PlannedCollapse.

  1. I was saying this 2 years ago. At least they are admitting reality.

I have become less and less optimistic about the possibility of a “soft landing” over the last two years. Unless I am completely wrong we will not have the time to respond before we get overwhelmed.

That was the KEY thing, the MOST IMPORTANT thing we got wrong about Global Warming. How fast the Earth would heat up in response to our Carbon Bomb.

If agricultural output falls 50% over the next 30 years, there will be wars. Lots and lots of wars.

What will emerge from that is anybody’s guess. I am fond of the idea of city-state’s but Collapse could be apocalyptically bad with only smaller social units being stable.

Our descendants are not going to have an easy time of it.

  3. Based on the total inability of USians to agree on anything, we will not be among the nations who participate in any ‘planning.’ blakestyger is correct. Unimaginable wars and chaos are the most likely scenarios. Will enough of us learn (The Great Remembering) the skills that allowed our ancient ancestors to survive (even thrive) for countless millennia, before the ‘Dawn of Civilization’ (The Great Forgetting)? “Smaller social units,” i.e. tribes, will be the only path to survival of our species.

    1. We agree that ‘big picture’, top down planning looks unlikely in many place. This is why we advocate for insurgent planning as the basis for a Planned Collapse – its about communities working together to meet basic needs. Its already happening in the US, for example, in poorer communities.

  4. Agreed. That is why, as soon as I get a little more settled in my new home (April 1?), I will turn my website – climatemitigationnews.org – towards providing information about the kinds of groups you describe. Such groups will do two things: provide immediate assistance to those who need it most, while also providing examples of sustainable modes of living.
I will always be open to passing along information about all such efforts, as discovering them all will be way beyond my individual ability. I plan to post contact information, organized by state and specific service(s) – community gardens & other food aid, health clinics, housing, legal aid, etc. Feel free (encouraged) to pass along such info via the ‘Contact Us’ page at the website.
