  1. Q1. Words are clearly important as we try to shift narratives in these challenging times.  So why “collapse” rather than “simplify” or “bend (not break)” (Hagens) or indeed “revolution”, “evolution”, “transformation”, ”enlightenment” etc?  “Collapse” seems pessimistic and loaded.  Humanity is smart and resourceful and can surely aim him for a positive impact solution to this crisis rather than hold a vision of something that will cause a lot of pain.

Q2. Extrapolating on any metric does indeed make the future look bleak.  However isn’t this merely another form of speculation in a non-linear, dynamic, chaotic system characterised by unpredictable and sudden change?

Q3. Dangerous line of thought perhaps, and this USED to be my position 30 years ago when I began to understand Jevons paradox, but if collapse is indeed inevitable, is there an argument for accelerating it given that the longer we leave it the steeper the cliff?  Best to collapse sooner rather than later whilst we still have a functioning society, vaguely intact ecosystems and significant although dwindling resources such as oil (which as Bucky Fuller said should only be used in an emergency – like collapse)?
