Another description of this is “predatory capitalism.” Under predatory capitalism, people prey on each other, thus keeping the economy going for awhile even after the resources are all used up. This system has several advantages: (1) It replaces the system of cooperation which is normal in non-hierarchical societies; (2) Average people can be convinced that dog-eat-dog capitalism is hard-wired behavior for humans, and hence they can be made to feel guilty about their very existence; and (3) the absence of trust and cooperation among humans makes life less worth living, rendering them/us less apt to resist exploitation and ultimate extinction.
