“Start using the ‘c’ word… The word ‘collapse’. Not in a panicked, chicken-little kind of way (though we would be absolutely justified in doing so), but in a measured, matter-of-fact way. Because to assume our continued destruction of the planet’s life-supporting systems could lead to any other outcome is irrational.”

The understanding of this global dilemma, called the Great Unravelling, the Great Simplification, the Polycrisis, the Metacrisis or as Bill Rees puts it simply “overshoot”, is widespread outside the mainstream. It is the devastation of our natural world by an out of control human enterprise and if I mention it to 99% of people they think I am mad. The human enterprise as it now exists will not contract voluntarily. Donut economics and/or degrowth are great concepts and are the only strategies that would give any hope of a decent standard of living for future generations, These strategies may work in isolated areas with smaller groups of people, but don’t translate into a world where greed and corruption reign and success is measured by overt manifestations of personal wealth and power. We are our own worst enemies and those of our children and their children and all the animals with whom we share this world. It makes me very sad.
